Teague Cemetery is located in the 1,000 block of West Broadway, 200 feet south of the street, up a ten-foot-wide trail. Established during the time of segregated graveyards, this two-acre cemetery reached capacity nearly seven decades ago with 252 burial sites. During these 70 years, legal ownership passed from person to person, and ultimately to people in Flint Michigan who had no idea of their ownership. When informed of their ownership of Teague Cemetery they wanted to donate this cemetery to an entity who could care for and maintain this cemetery.
“Teague Cemetery 42431 Freedom Forever Fund”, a nonprofit entity was formed to own and maintain this two-acre cemetery. Kraig Schell, Susan Cruzan, and I believe with enough donated money, the sound investment of the capital of the Fund, can generate enough monies to maintain and care for Teague Cemetery in perpetuity. We feel, as most of you do, that our war veterans, as well as ordinary citizens buried here, deserve having their burial sites respected and cared for as other cemeteries are.
There are many segregated “Teague” type cemeteries throughout Hopkins County and the Commonwealth of Kentucky that we can investigate, accept as donated cemeteries, and maintain them, but Teague Cemetery here in Madisonville is our primary goal. Know that your generous tax-free donations will be used to care for these unkept and forgotten cemeteries, which hold the remains of our honored veterans from The Civil War thru The Korean War, their families, and many other Kentucky citizens, with dignity and grace.
